A Study for Measurement of Airway Resistance in Patients with Obstructive Airway Diseases

Abstract
The specific test of airway resistance enables the physician to determine whether MVV or maximal expiratory flow rate is decreased without the requirement of maximal respiratory effort on the part of the patient.
It provides an objective test that is suitable for judging pulmonary disablity because the patient cannot voluntarily influence the result of the test. It is also useful in quantitative and objective evaluation of therapeutic procedures designed to relieve airway obstruction on an individual basis.
Clinical study was undertaken to compare the values of airway resistance and other pulmonary functions in 25 normal control subjects, 10 patients with bronchial asthma, 10 patients with chronic bronchitis and 10 patients with pulmonary emphysema.
The results were as follows;
1) In patients with obstructive airway diseases, FRC were significantly increased compaired to normal control group. In contrast, neither of obstructive airway disease groups were significantly differ each other.
2) In the entire groups of obstructive airway diseases, FVC, FEV1, FEF 25^¢¥75 and FEV1/ FVC were significantly lower than normal control group, but not significantly differ among the patients of the three obstructive airway disease groups.
3) The values for airway resistance with emphysema were lower than the other two obstructive airway diseases.
These findings emphasize the need for measurement of airway resistance to differentiate the patients with emphysema from other obstructive airway disease.
